I have contempt for most of the world and think they should be gone, and I love them。I speak in aphorisms but none of them are witty or especially wise。Kindness and compassion are bad, power is good, black is white, and nothing makes sense。Women are inferior。Everyone who does not agree with me doesn’t understand me。Thus bloviated Zarathustra。One of the problems that has afflicted the post-religious world is the tendency by non-believers to hook onto another equally problematic faith-based narrat I have contempt for most of the world and think they should be gone, and I love them。I speak in aphorisms but none of them are witty or especially wise。Kindness and compassion are bad, power is good, black is white, and nothing makes sense。Women are inferior。Everyone who does not agree with me doesn’t understand me。Thus bloviated Zarathustra。One of the problems that has afflicted the post-religious world is the tendency by non-believers to hook onto another equally problematic faith-based narrative and put that in its place, thereby giving atheism a bad name it doesn’t deserve。In many countries this took the form of Communism, a belief that was well-meaning in concept but put into practice by brutal ideologues with catastrophic consequences。Then there is Nietzsche, famous for declaring the death of God, who acted as an inspiration for National Socialism in his native Germany。 Is it fair to blame Nietzsche for the use that the Nazis made of his ideas? Is it fair to blame the Bible for causing inquisitions and witch trials? Is it fair to compare the two?In a way, not so。 The inquisitions and witch trials took their inspiration from direct and unmistakeable Bible passages which stated what Christians should do with non-believers and witches。 Thus Spake Zarathustra does not contain any direct allusions to the worldview of Hitler and the atrocities he committed。Part of the problem is that it is not really clear what Nietzsche believed, and the book is interpreted and misinterpreted by many, who make it what they want。 Despite its supposed anti-religious message, Thus Spake Zarathustra is worded in a Messianic prose, albeit one that owes more to the vague waffle of eastern religions, rather than western ones。 Zarathustra is a prophet of sorts, who wanders around delivering barely-comprehensible platitudes。 These are naturally admired by everyone, no matter how vague, offensive, or lacking in comfort。 There is a vague narrative thread, but this is more like a poem than a novel and is supposedly a philosophical work。There are a few common threads in Zarathustra’s ideas。 He denigrates conventional morality and compassion in favour of the will to power。 He dismisses Christianity。 He promotes the idea of humanity progressing to become a superman。 He discusses notions of eternal recurrence (the idea that all existence recurs eternally), though it is unclear how seriously Nietzsche takes the idea。This kind of abstract and drawn-out style is sadly common in German literature of the time, and has given me many a tedious hour of reading。 It may explain why Germans used to have a reputation for being impractical dreamers and poets before the two world wars。 Yet curiously Hitler was no efficient leader, but was in fact an impractical dreamer cut from the same cloth as Nietzsche。 Indeed Hitler’s ideas are uncomfortably close to those of Nietzsche – he promoted an ideology that eschewed compassion and pity, valued the will to power, dismissed the value of the lives of those who thought differently from himself, and advocated taking humanity to a higher plane, the Superman。We cannot exactly blame Nietzsche for the use that Hitler made of his ideas, but it shows the dangerous of promoting quasi-religious vague doctrines that take a perverse pleasure in refuting conventional thinking and morality just for the sake of it。 Would Nietzsche have supported Hitler if he had lived in that age? Quite possibly。Our best glimpse of any philosopher is when he talks about anything that comes close to being easily comprehensible。 If what he says is completely wrong there, then it gives us a hint how to view his more confusing and opaque passages。In the case of Nietzsche, this is in his appalling attitude towards women。 The book makes a number of risible sexist statements that hardly suggest any profound thinking on the subject by Nietzsche。 Naturally the philosopher has a female character on hand to agree with every chauvinistic statement made by Zarathustra。 The good thing about offering a fictionalised version of your own ideas is that there is nobody on hand to seriously challenge them。 It is rather like having an argument in your head in which you always perfectly refute the other person。 Sadly when you get round to having that conversation with the actual person, it does not go quite so well。It is perhaps not too surprising to learn that Nietzsche was unmarried and childless。 He proposed to a woman and was turned down。 His views on women were therefore formed in ignorance and perhaps resentment。 A psychiatrist might be intrigued by his obsession with impurity and disgust in Thus Spake Zarathustra。With most philosophers, I feel that in reading their works I am confronted by intelligence and thoughtfulness。 Even when I disagree with most of their ideas, I feel that they have been sensibly thought out。 With Nietzsche, I see intellect and cleverness, but no real intelligence。 He is adept at phrasing his ideas in a unique and challenging manner, but much of his work seems more like contradicting received opinion for the sake of it。 。。。more

I feel like I'd need to take a class to fully understand this book。 This is a unique merger of literature and philosophy。 Nietzsche puts his words in the mouth of Zarathustra, who makes several addresses and monologues in a very lyrical, exuberant and metaphorical style。 Sometimes I just had to stop and admire not only the wisdom but also the artistry in the writing。The book does put up a fight, as each sentence has to be read carefully to be fully understood, and many times it is difficult to g I feel like I'd need to take a class to fully understand this book。 This is a unique merger of literature and philosophy。 Nietzsche puts his words in the mouth of Zarathustra, who makes several addresses and monologues in a very lyrical, exuberant and metaphorical style。 Sometimes I just had to stop and admire not only the wisdom but also the artistry in the writing。The book does put up a fight, as each sentence has to be read carefully to be fully understood, and many times it is difficult to grasp。 Zarathustra makes heavy use of metaphors and rarely is the meaning literal。 On many cases he says one thing and the opposite in the same breath。But you do get the main point。 Zarathustra is presented as the ultimate humanist, and the concept of the super-man, or the superior man, is all over the book。 He rejects preserving man as he is and religion and God, as they are crystallized beliefs。 He believes man should strive to improve himself perpetually, until a superior state is achieved。 He considers the current state of man just a stepping stone to the super-man。 He both despises tradition and stagnation and preaches the enjoyment of Life, free from superstition, fear and faith。 He denounces wise men and the State as entities living off the status-quo and as crowd-pleasers, therefore not contributing to the advancement of man。 However he is not a hedonist, as he criticizes excesses and lust as the pursuit of Knowledge is the only acceptable life。I do recommend the book and Nietzsche's beliefs are conveyed beautifully but it's not an easy read。 。。。more

It is necessary because the religion of the Europeans, Christianity, has withered and turned weak。 Against tension of mind and body, of perennial self-searching aimed upwards, it says: "remain in peace, for heaven is eternal"。 Against natural hierarchy and natural greatness, it says: "the meek shall inherit the earth"。 Against the natural feeling of contempt when in the vicinity of unwashed, uneducated, short-sighted mass men, it says: "feel pity for the weak, the suffering, the poor, for all men are equal (in the sight of God)"。 Against hearty exuberance, joyful feelings of strength, and laughter, it says: "stop laughing, for this world is ugliness and vanity and evil and wicked and the Devil's stage"。 Against the mind, against rationality, against the unfettered search for the truth, it says: "keep your faith: man's mind plays many tricks"。 Against beauty, against dancing, against the pleasures of the eye, the ear, and the foot, it says: "stop the senses; nigh, stop sensing, for that leads to temptation"。 Against accomplishment and its derivation, pride, it says: "you are nothing before God!"。"No!" says Nietzsche。 The strong are those who charge ahead at life; who become hard in body and mind; who have the courage and confidence to laugh at their mistakes, at new knowledge, and at human folly; who become both the commander and the obeyer of themselves, living steadfastly according to their own law — a real, visceral law。 No false laws, no jumping through hoops。 Hoops are for children, for minds that cannot order themselves。 But for adults? For those with internal law and order? Play-acting with false morals for false reasons will only drive them to gnash their teeth at night。 So too will flattery and praise。 These rogues — disguised as benevolence — sneak into one's mind and modify one's behavior。 Easily, all too easily can they destroy one's destiny through behavioristic conditioning。 So keep one's eyes open and do not be afraid to say the magic word, "No!"。 That "No!" is crucial for the attainment of one's destiny。 A yes-man becomes a rug, walked on by acquaintances, scoundrels, and exploiters。 Pregnant with a Dream and a Goal, his inability to say "No!" will result in a spontaneous abortion。 Ran over by a stampede of cattle, of cud-chewers and nearsighted herd animals, the Great Vision of the eagle will be replaced by the senseless wriggling of the worm。 So thresh carefully! Keep a keen eye on what is wheat and what is chaff! Boundaries preserve — without them, all is mixed-up muck。The eye and the judgment separate the wheat from the chaff in one's life, but suffering separates them in mankind。 Do you become distraught, do you cry "woe is me!", does suffering tip over your unstable base? Then you are weak。 The strong bask in suffering, in fact require it to live。 They must exercise their will against a challenge。 That is the struggle, that is the fight! Happiness: weak。 Duty to one's noble destiny: strong。 Setbacks need not phase one: "be of good cheer, what does it matter? How much is still possible! Learn to laugh at yourselves as one must laugh", for "the higher its type, the more rarely a thing succeeds"。 The higher a specimen of mankind, the higher its goals。 High goals create tension of spirit, an anxiety to reach that which few have before。 So be it! Let the tension drive you high! Let the tension harden your body, focus your mind, and enliven your nerves! And if you fail, so be it。 Do you become a failure? You do just as much as mankind becomes a failure if you fail。 So aim high, aim for the precipice。 The precipice is shaky, unstable; certainly the flat fields would be more comfortable。 But you are not here for comfort, you are part of a long chain of organisms of increasing complexity。 Just as much as the universe is decaying due to entropy, our planet is becoming more variegated and more interconnected。 From rocks to single-celled organisms to multi-celled organisms to insects to mammals to monkeys to man, a direction can be detected。 The next step is to overcome man: to create the übermensch。 You are on a tightrope between animal and übermensch: which direction will you go? Will you debase yourself to the lowest rabble, puts walls around your mind, relinquish your will, and resign in nauseous disgust with this world? Or will you say, "Yes!", charge forth into the struggle of existence and succeed? One path for the pouter, another for the warrior。Warriors: "Ten times a day you must overcome yourself 。 。 。 ten times you must reconcile yourself again with yourself 。 。 。 ten truths a day you must find 。 。 。 ten times a day you must laugh and be cheerful"。 These allow the warrior to sleep well at night。 Without them, a disturbed, twisted soul awaits him in bed。 Without overcoming, flabbiness and self-doubt consume the soul from the inside。 Without reconciliation, the soul shudders with anxiety about its direction。 Without new truths, the soul becomes senile and demented — forever spouting lifeless information gained in youth。 Without good laughter and cheer, the soul becomes angry and hateful at life, willing for death and pouting about the world。But be careful, O ye warriors! Your hearty flesh and spirited mind are great attractions to puny parasites。 And so the rabble will burrow themselves in your soul and leech your energy out of you。 Nourishing their hatred of all ideas and mountain-climbers, they will attempt to pull you down into the dirt。 Your bright mind and elegant voice will sing out ideas — and they will meet a shabby brick wall。 You aim for your telos, your self-completion and destiny。 But "everyone among them talks; nothing turns out well any more and is finished。 Everyone cackles; but who still wants to sit quietly in the nest and hatch eggs?"。 Hatch eggs? Ruminate over ideas? Think? Not necessary。 The mass man gossips, endlessly swipes through his phone, watches his movies and TV shows, peruses a detective novel, and is happy。 Oh, the disgust! Nausea! Eyes up! To the mountains we look, in the mountains we shall live。 "With happy nostrils I again breathe mountain freedom。 At last my nose delivered from the smell of everything human"。 Yes, we climb to the mountains; no providence takes us there。 Our joy, our ever-replenishing strength lies in the words, "Thus I willed it! Thus I shall will it!"。 Muscular strength and bodily hardness: "thus I willed it!"。 Regular company with the greatest minds of the West: "thus I willed it!"。 A beautiful wife and resplendent children: "thus I willed it!"。 Such shall be our joy。 We joy in action, we joy in conquering。 To the heights we climb! No will-o-the-wisp, no "fate", no "renunciation in the will of our Lord" will take us there; only our steps, one after another, shall do so! And so we take control of our destiny, as the master and the servant of ourselves, aiming upwards, towards strength。But, lest I sound like the rooster in the morning, I remind you that there is much work to do。 "Even in the best there is something that nauseated; and even the best is something that must be overcome"。 Yes, and to overcome one needs a strong will。 But be honest about what you can overcome。 Mountain climbers don't leap; they take one step after another。 And so shall you climb over yourself, overcoming your weaknesses and steeling your will。 The journey up will sometimes be flat, sometimes be steep。 Steepness brings forth fear。 Fear? A proving ground of the soul。 "Brave is he who fears but conquers fear, who sees the abyss, but with pride"。 And so shall you climb。 Feel the fear, feel the weakling in you; say "No!" and do your duty anyway。To conclude, although we may be nourished "with strong virile food and forceful maxims" after reading the above words, we must not "let the feeble feminine spirits seize us again after dinner!"。 And come in after dinner they will! "All are equal", "be yourself", "I love you the way you are", "humble yourself", "serve others before yourself", "don't push yourself too hard" these feminine spirits implore you。 Don't let their sappy, sugar-coated words infect you! Sweet though they may be, their result is the same as that of sugar: a weak, flabby, ugly defilement of man。 Don't defile yourselves, O nobles ones! Climb mountains and scale heights! Train the will and use it to fly above the mediocre millions。 Propel one's self upwards through perennial self-conquering and self-overcoming! Fight the religion of comfort with the religion of strength。 We may lose the battle, but we shall win the war! 。。。more

I don't care that there may be something I missed about this, but for me, this is utter garbage and I think Nietzsche meant it as such。 My first thought when I began reading is that this must be a parody, a negative and destructive parody, that exemplifies the ways of nihilism in all its destructiveness of thought by showing us the epitome of nihilistic preachers in the cave-dwelling Zarathustra。 This is not thought, this is anti-thought。 I will leave it at that。The only reason it did not get on I don't care that there may be something I missed about this, but for me, this is utter garbage and I think Nietzsche meant it as such。 My first thought when I began reading is that this must be a parody, a negative and destructive parody, that exemplifies the ways of nihilism in all its destructiveness of thought by showing us the epitome of nihilistic preachers in the cave-dwelling Zarathustra。 This is not thought, this is anti-thought。 I will leave it at that。The only reason it did not get one star is that I think Nietzsche manage to accomplish his goal by writing it in order to provoke the reaction I had to it。 。。。more

This book is great! Perhaps not the best of his works to first read, but I enjoyed and understood it regardless。 It felt very epic and yeah, besides it getting a little repetitive towards the 2nd part, it picked up again and I loved the rest。

Maybe I'm not smart enough to understand this philosophical word view。 There was just too much anger, bitterness, and misogyny。 And even in the parts where I could read without judging, the allegories and conjectures were totally unconvincing to me。 Maybe I'm not smart enough to understand this philosophical word view。 There was just too much anger, bitterness, and misogyny。 And even in the parts where I could read without judging, the allegories and conjectures were totally unconvincing to me。 。。。more
